On May 8, the Maritzburg Musicians Club (MMC) will host one of South Africa's legendary musicians when award winning Larry Amos, "old boy" of PMB's Harward Boy's High School, makes a nostalgic visit to 'my home town' as he likes to call it. Larry is celebrating his 60th birthday with the three "F" words - Friends, Family ... and Fans! He will be supported in his performance by local newcomer Miriam.
Larry Amos has an esteemed musical history, including the successful band Baxtop which was formed in Johannesburg in 1978 with Larry Amos on guitar and vocals, Tim Parr (guitar, vocals), Fuzzy Marcus (guitar, vocals) and Bruce Williams (drums, vocals). It was billed as ' the best blues-rock-boogie band that never came out of the American South.'
Work it out is rated as one of the Top Ten Albums of South Africa according to Garth Chilvers. Baxtop became South Africa's top original blues-rock band, signed a recording contract with WEA records, and had a number one hit with JoBangles and also won a Sarie Award. The band also toured with Millie Jackson on her South African visit.
Amos has devoted his life to music and played with an enthralling array of top musicians, including the likes of Johnny Fourie, Alistair Cokley, Mike Faure, George Worthmore, Jethro Butho, Julian Laxton, Mike Slavin and numerous others. He and Tim Parr supported Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Standard Bank Arena and were complimented by them for their outstanding performance and the song Let the Sun.
The performance on May 8 takes place at 20h00 at Red Door, the home of the Maritzburg Musicians Club (MMC). Entrance R30. The Red Door is situated in Quarry Rd, off Victoria Road, in Pietermaritzburg. Car guards on duty. More information from Roger O’Neill on 083 230 6562
