(Iain EWOK Robinson)
The Playhouse Company in Durban is all geared up to delve deeper into the world’s dominant subculture and the favourite youth culture, hip-hop, debunking the conventional humdrum of theatre performances by showcasing a one-man show designed to amuse, inform and convey a vital message.
Written and performed by Iain EWOK Robinson, Seriously is an autobiographical depiction of a hip-hop artist’s journey to stardom. The production is a genuine rags-to-riches anecdote and a quintessential local success story.
Directed and conceptualised by Karen Melissa Logan, Seriously is one of the productions showcased at the annual New Stages line-up funded and hosted by The Playhouse Company. The rationale behind the programme is to present South African productions that are creative, original and artistically thought-provoking. Seriously is no different.
Iain Ewok Robinson takes audiences on a multi-disciplinary expedition from his small town beginnings in Empangeni in the early 1980s all the way to the present. Astonishingly, he becomes a world-renowned South African white rapper.
