Durban is in for a feast of pop and opera, and classical cross over music when Thailand’s sensational super voice band VIVA! makes its Durban debut with at Seabrooke’s Theatre, from May 21 to 26.Featuring five singing superstars from Thailand’s first and only pop-opera musical ensemble VIVA!, these classically trained songbirds promise to have audiences joining them in their selection of traditional, opera and pop classics. South African musical arranger and conductor Mark Cheyne has assembled the cream of Thai talent to produce a fresh and invigorating group of five distinguished voices in perfect harmony celebrating the joy of music.
The vocalists made their triumphant debut in Bangkok in December 2010 and were also featured in many popular Thai Television Specials, including Star Stage and the star-studded Patty international Film Awards (the equivalent of the Asian Oscars). They have headlined the ChiangMai Music festival and shared the stage in Bangkok with South African’s Freshly Ground and Garth Taylor.
A little over a year ago they made a lightning visit to Southern Africa with performances in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Harare, where they were greeted with standing ovations nightly.
These Thai prodigies are taking the classical crossover market by storm with their inspirational and impassioned recital of traditional opera and contemporary pop music.
VIVA! will perform a wonderful variety of eclectic pop and rock classics that includes Oceano, 21 Guns, Toreador, Prayer in the Night, You Raise Me Up, Unchained Melody, Labium, Adecco and Barcelona, to name a few. From the songs of Queen to Greenday, VIVA! looks set to have their audiences begging for more.
Catch VIVA! at Seabrooke’s from May 21 to 26 at 19h30 with an early show at 17h00 on May 26. Booking is advised as there are only seven performances.
