The KwaZulu-Natal Youth Orchestra will perform at the Chelsea Preparatory School Arts Festival on June 9. Conducted by Lindsay Johnston, it will present a varied programme of music which includes both classical works and more modern pieces.
The KZNYO is assembled from a group of young musicians who audition every year for the opportunity to participate in a classical orchestral environment that is conducive to their aspirations for musical excellence. The members are scholars who take music as an additional subject at school or who take private external tuition, and who come from a wide range of backgrounds. The orchestral environment gives them an opportunity to develop their musical talent as well as learn how to interact musically and socially with like-minded young people. The concerts they play give them the opportunity to experience the satisfaction and success of cooperative effort, and outreach concerts help to instil in the players a sense of social responsibility in sharing their music with the community.
The Chelsea Preparatory School Arts Festival is an annual event under the direction of the co-ordinator of the Cultural Department, Mrs. Gillian Atkinson, showcasing dance, music, drama and fine arts performed and created by the children. The festival is open to the public and all are invited to spend a day at the school and enjoy a line up of fun art, music and drama, supporting and encouraging future talent. John van de Ruit, author of the Spud series, will give a brief discussion followed by a book signing.
The festival runs from 09h00 to 13h30. “I heart Market” will be running throughout the morning and will display even more of Durban’s fine arts and crafts as well as an array of refreshment stalls to choose from.
The KZNYO will open the festival with its performance in the school hall between 09h00 and 09h30. The Chelsea Preparatory School is situated at 30 Chelsea Drive, Durban North.
