Making their debut appearance at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest on June 19 will be the quirky and fun jazz band, Platform Jazz.
Platform Jazz have been going for over 18 years and started primarily as a Dixieland Band. Recently, they have also branched out into big band and Latin style jazz. They are regular performers down the South Coast and at the Hilton Festival as well as playing at many corporate and private functions in and around Durban.
The line up of musicians includes band leader Cathy Peacock on trumpet, Ian Holloway on clarinet, Duncan Wooldridge on trombone, Jonathan Judge on sax and Andreas Kappen on double bass, Bruce Baker on drums and Calli Thomson on keyboards. Joining them this year is popular performer and singer, Shelley McLean.
Some favourites to listen out for will be traditional Dixie numbers such as Alexander’s Ragtime Band; Basin St Blues; a tribute to the big band era where you can hear In the Mood and A String of Pearls. Shelley McLean will sing a selection of standards including My Baby Just Cares for Me and Route 66, to name a few, and there will be some up tempo Latin numbers including The Girl From Ipanema and Brazil.
This group played to sold-out audiences at the Rhumbelow in February and had rave reviews. Their brand of entertainment is infectious and if jazz is your bag, don't miss this fun show!
Platform Jazz performs for one week only from June 19 to 24 at The Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest. Tickets R165 Tuesday dinner and Sunday lunch and R195 Wednesday to Saturday include a good value two course meal.
