The 12th Caltex Isicathamiya High Schools Choir Competition held on May 4 in the Playhouse Opera was a huge success. Over 50 choirs participated in this annual energetic, vibrant and youth based music festival. Judges had their hands full trying to find the winners as the standard was so exceptional.
Compèred for the fourth time by popular Ukhozi FM and SABC sports presenter Joe Hudla, the show aims to preserve, promote and develop Isicathamiya at grassroots level. Other top names in attendance were SABC music director Dr Thulasizwe Nkabinde, Prof Cosbie Mbhele, Dr Thembinkosi Biyela of the KZN Arts and Culture, Thanda Ndlovu of Ukhozi FM and veteran arts personality Caroline Smart to name but a few.
First prize of R10,000, trophy and certificate went to Sobantu High of Pietermaritzburg. Second spot went to last year’s winners, Sikhethuxolo High of Hammarsdale, scooping R3,000, trophy and certificate. The third place went to Hlahlindlela of Bothas Hill taking home R2,000, trophy and certificate.
There were 10 other consolation prizes of R400 each, trophy and certificates were: Siqongweni; Kwamncane; Siyajabula; Diepkloof; Khabazela; Zamazulu; John Dube; Inwabi; Ohlange and St Julius.
