Grahamstown: July 1, 2012 – Review by Keith Millar
The music of many of the greatest rock guitarists of all time in one show? What more could the lover of this music ask for.
This is unashamedly a tribute show. The Graham Gillot Band has paid great attention to recreating the unique sounds and feel of these legendary guitarists. With Graham Gillot on lead guitar and vocals, Duncan Combe on bass and his daughter Jeane Combe on drums, this trio from Somerset West in the Cape province performed the music of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Stevie ray Vaughn, Joe Satriani and many others with great energy and skill.
Graham is a virtuoso guitarist and he is backed by two musicians of considerable talent. They had the audience of about 100 on their feet dancing, and clapping along with the music of their heroes.
Between each number, Graham explained the style the guitarists used to achieve their particular sound and a slide show displaying images of these great artists also helped set the scene for what was a rollicking concert.
Held in the Cuervo Music Room, the concert was rounded off by Graham playing a composition of his own entitled Tap Dance on an acoustic guitar. – Keith Millar
