RED DOOR MUSIC

This week’s Red Door event from the Maritzburg Musicians Club tomorrow (July 3) offers a line-up of three bands: Hey Hustler, Scarlet Hill and Phace.

Hey! Hustler started out in early 2010 when Nich Hustler began playing as a solo acoustic singer/songwriter. At the beginning of 2011, he added Jes Bedingfield to the band as bassist (and also biggest fan), who added a little more gravity to the acoustic sound. July 2011 saw the release of their first EP titled: Have Beard, Will Sing for Love.... A small collection of songs about love lost and unrequited, it had all the successes and shortcomings of a first EP but was nevertheless full of learning. One of those learning curves being that Nich was unhappy with the direction in which the sound was going. Late 2011 saw the addition of Tayla Rowell on drums, who apparently had the missing third of Nich's songs tucked away inside her arms. Full of stoke and having a small collection of new and more mature songs; they set out on a journey together...

Scarlet Hill is a three piece Indie band that has been rocking South Africa for several years now. Founded by high school friends in 2006, the band has been through many phases from a generic rock band to the extremes of a short lived ‘screamo’ act. However, they have discovered their niche over the past 18 months as a 'party-till-you-drop' Indie band generating catchy melodies, punchy riffs and profound lyrics. Members are Jordi van Dyk (bass guitar and vocals); David Daniels (lead guitar) and Bryn Scott (drums)

Phace is headed up by Nick Pharazyn and promises to offer lots of exciting music. The band is composed of Theo Young on lead guitar, his brother Quintin Young on bass, Patrick Austin on drums and Nick Pharazyn on the guitar and also vocalist. They write their own music which is a combination of rock, jazz and blues.

The music starts at 20h00 on July 3 and The Red Door is situated in Quarry Rd, off Victoria Road, in Pietermaritzburg. Car guards on duty. More information from Roger O’Neill on 083 230 6562
