(Gcina Mhlophe)
Legendary South African storyteller, Dr Gcina Mhlophe, hosts the Open Mic Poetry session, a regular feature at The Playhouse Company's South African Women's Arts Festival (SAWAF) on August 4 at 13h00.
Held during Women's Month every year, SAWAF has a long history of supporting women's arts and creating valuable dialogue, whilst showcasing cutting edge productions. This year’s festival comprises an exciting mix of drama, poetry, dance and music. Through these productions, SAWAF seeks to highlight important issues that affect the lives of contemporary South African women, and celebrate their triumphs.
Top local artists Bongani Mavuso, Naima McLean, Zolani Mkiva, Ntsiki Mazwai and Sbo da Poet will support Mhlophe's charismatic storytelling style and explore this year's Open Mic Poetry session’s theme, Poetry Moves. Members of the poetry community are encouraged to participate in this exciting and creative two-hour session, where language will be woven and shaped into a rich tapestry celebrating women from all walks of life and the role they play in society.
"Poetry is such a powerful artform, and the Open Mic Poetry session sees some of country's finest poets explore the challenges South African women face, as well as recognising their triumphs," says Playhouse Company Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini. "We look forward to members of the local community lending their voices to this important session."
The Open Mic Poetry session begins at 13h00 in the Playhouse Drama Theatre on August 4. Admission is free but registration is required through The Playhouse Box Office on 031 369 9540 or 031 369 9596.
The Festival runs at The Playhouse from August 3 until August 11 and booking for other SAWAF productions is through Computicket on 0861 915 8000 or The Playhouse Box Office.
