BURN THE FLOOR

When Jozi residents were enjoying Burn The Floor's sell-out season last year, the response from Durban residents was unprecedented, wanting the show to tour, thus leading to the decision that the hit Broadway production will end its 2012 South African tour in Durban at The Playhouse with a two-week season from August 22.

With the creativity of world-famous ballroom choreographer Jason Gilkison, Burn The Floor takes ballroom to a whole new level. His unique choreography combines the classic ballroom styles with a modern flare. “For those of you that have already had the Burn The Floor experience you need to come back!” he says. “I have re-choreographed numerous numbers, changed five songs in the show and have re-costumed the second act. The show’s new ending will blow you away, and blow any perceptions you have of Ballroom Dancing. I guarantee that This Ain’t Your Grandma’s Ballroom! Amongst our rebellious cast, you will also witness the rise of a new South African star! I trust you will be back for more!”

Since last year’s tour, South African champion dancer Keoikantse Motsepe has joined Burn The Floor as a fully-fledged member of this hit international dance sensation.

Burn The Floor is the show that revolutionised the image of dance, which then launched the many reality dance shows, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars and Superstars of Dance, to name but a few.

The energetic production was originally designed as a special performance in 1997 at Sir Elton John’s 50th birthday celebration. At the height of the festivities, a group of 16 young dancers brought the house down with a ten-minute dance cabaret. After seeing this performance, legendary Australian theatre producer Harley Medcalf had the spark of an idea to build a full stage show around what he had just seen.

Since then, the show has toured in 30 countries and over 160 cities worldwide. The current company boasts performers from 10 countries with more than 100 Championship Dance titles between them.

Burn The Floor labels itself as “Ballroom. Reinvented.” Filled from start to finish with spellbinding numbers in ballroom dance styles ranging from The Waltz, Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Mambo, Tango, Swing, Jive, Lindy Hop, Viennese Waltz, and Paso Doble.

Burn The Floor – The Temperature Rises Tour is presented in Durban by Joburg Theatre in Association with Dance Partner Productions, M-Net and East Coast Radio. Performances take place in The Playhouse Opera from August 22 to September 2. Tickets R200 booked through Computicket – 083 915 8000 or www.computicket.com - or the Playhouse Company Dial-A-Seat facility on 031 369 9555 or Box Office numbers 031 369 9596 / 369 9540.

A special ‘two for the price of one’ is available for Talk Back Tuesdays (August 28), whereby the dancers stay on stage after the show for a question-and-answer session.
