HOW SOON IS NOW

Drama for Life (DFL) invites outstanding, innovative, cutting-edge artists from all over Africa to submit their entries for the 2012 Sex Actually Festival, a national festival that focuses on creating an awareness using various theatre forms to reflect the issues in society.

Pietermaritzburg has made it into another festival yet again!

How soon is now? is a retelling of the complexities faced by teenagers in a contemporary society in the form of Forum Theatre. Conceptualised and directed by Stallone Santino and workshopped with the cast and crew, it deals with a fairly new relationship between Jenna and Ringo played by Kwanele Thusi and Nompilo Jili. The relationship grows intense, and a dark secret is brought to light. This leads to a dramatic shift in the lives of the characters. How will they deal with it?

Pearly Balfour skilfully entices and facilitates the audience as the drama is re-enacted while the audience do not remain as passive onlookers but rather ‘spect-actors’ who engage critically in the drama and bring about a change in events, in accordance to the vision of society. The audience is entertained with music and visuals creatively assisted by Nomfundo Mbambo.

Warm-ups and exercises are conducted by Stallone Santino who expertly prepares the audience for the drama ahead. Participants can look forward to exciting giveaways.

Representing KwaZulu-Natal, Prompt Side Productions owned by Stallone Santino brings to Johannesburg an exciting forum theatre show with a cast and crew of experienced students from the University of Kwazulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg Campus. The show effectively integrates elements such as physical theatre, contemporary dance (choreographed by Kwanele Thusi), poetry, music and realism. How Soon Is Now is thought provoking, explicit, and thoroughly entertaining, bringing to life the veracity of the HIV demon in the modern day.

Performances take place at Wits University on August 30 from 09h00 to 10h30 (tbc) in the Wits Downstairs and at 13h00 in the Spaceframe. A further performance takes place in the Wits Amphitheatre on August 31 at 13h15.
