The Live Poets Society meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Poets and lovers of poetry are welcome to listen, read and share their works and discuss poetry in all its varied forms and uniqueness.
The next meeting of the Live Poets Society (LiPS) takes place this evening at the Point Yacht Club in Durban.
The publicity reads: “Women truly embody the power of strength, when families gather at the hearth to listen to stories from grandma’s memories, her voice rising in lyrical passionate poetic language so inherently rich and vibrant recalling pertinent moments of her life with stories rich and full of anecdotes. Nostalgia permeates the air and you are cast upon a journey of recalling memories of a time when woman like grand ma and our mothers dared to dream of a world were woman would break the mould and cease to be just home keepers and child bearers.
“Soon the conversations around the warmth of the hearth will be interspersed with the cornucopia of other women, remembering stories from the archives of their distant past life. And in solidarity as only women can, they commemorate their common struggles with a silent strength, that says we have walked the long road with determination and resilience against insurmountable odds. We have reached the summit. We can now stand proud, shoulder to shoulder with any man.
“The love that sparked the dream of freedom the dream that they chose has finally chosen them, and there is no way that they will return as subservient servants of man.
“On August 9 we celebrate National Woman’s Day in South Africa. There are many great women writers and poets. Women from all walks of life gave up and sacrificed so much at the altar of freedom, lets us commemorate their heroic deeds, let us remember and praise them in our poetry.”
There is no Guest Poet for August, all women poets are welcome to be the centrepiece and showcase their poetic prowess through the spoken word.
The LiPS Rendezvous takes place this evening (August 1) at 17h30 for 18h00 at the Point Yacht Club, Victoria Embankment. Entrance is free.
