From October 9 at 21h10, BBC Entertainment
(channel 120 on DStv) will screen a special anniversary of Absolutely Fabulous.
Some 20 years ago, the world was introduced
to Edina, Patsy, Saffron, Bubble and Mother. It has never been quite the same
again. As outrageous, scandalous, raucous and fashion-addicted as always, the
ladies are back on screen reprising their award-winning roles in three specials
– and they’re going to be fabulous, darling.
Also known as Ab Fab, the British
sitcom was created by Jennifer
Saunders, based on an original idea by her and Dawn French.
It is written by Saunders, who plays the leading character of Eddy. It also
stars Joanna
Lumley (Patsy) and Julia Sawalha (Saffron), along with June
Whitfield (Mother) and Jane Horrocks (Bubble).
Eddy worked in PR, and PR’d things. Into
every new fad and fashion imaginable, she and best friend Patsy were often
found to be at the bottom of a champagne glass, or more likely, bottle – and
not much has changed. Long-suffering Saffy was hardworking and the grownup of
the house; all but ignored by her mother and hated by Patsy.
Now, returning to the small screen to mark
this special anniversary, the series presents a life-changing experience for
one character… which invariably affects all the others. Patsy is forced to find
out how old she actually is, and discovers her birth certificate. Eddy also
sets her sights on changing the career of a very big fish indeed, taking over
the Royal Albert Hall.
Even the London 2012 Olympics aren’t safe
from the disgraceful duo as Eddy and Patsy play their own very special part in
this prestigious sporting event. Eddy rents out her house to someone rather
important (Hollywood, darling), and the ladies schmooze some rather famous UK
athletes, as only they know how.
20 years on, the ladies are a tiny bit
older, none the wiser – but definitely still Absolutely Fabulous!
