Kicking
off with a weekend of gallery launches, classical music, open gardens at their
spring best and a potters’ market, the annual Art In Clay series of ceramics exhibitions in Franschhoek in the
Cape runs from October 27 to November 16.
Art In Clay is the brainchild of one of the doyens of South
African porcelain, Franschhoek resident David Walters, who recently won the
Merit Award at the Ceramics SA National Exhibition in Pretoria.
David
Walters made a major contribution to KZN art and craft during the time he spent
in this province. After graduating with a BA Fine Arts
from the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, where he and his wife
Michelle Anderson both majored in Ceramics, they established the Nkwaleni
Pottery in Hilton before moving on to Caversham Mill at Lidgetton. After the
old mill was washed away in the 1987 floods, the couple moved to England before
returning to South Africa ten years later and settling in Franschoek.
The
weekend also hosts the Franschhoek Classic Music Festival which includes KZN’s Christopher
Duigan in the line-up.
Over this
weekend, (October 27 to 28), the Cape Craft and Design Institute will partner
with the local Lions Club to host the potters’ market in front of the
Franschhoek Town Hall, as part of the Lions Open Garden Festival. A fine
variety of craft-art, functional ceramics and porcelain by Western Cape potters
will be on sale to the public.
