The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at
the University of KwaZulu-Natal will present well-known trumpeter Feya Faku on November
2.
This accomplished musician - Fezile “Feya”
Faku - was born in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. He studied music at University
of Natal with Darius Brubeck and graduated with a Diploma in Jazz Studies. He
lived in Durban for 14 years where his music career started to blossom.
He has performed and recorded with local
musicians such as Barney Rachabane, Pat Matshikiza, Basel Coetzee, Winston ‘Mankunku’
Ngozi, Bheki Mseleku, Abdullah Ibrahim and a great number of international
musicians. He has released four albums: Hommage
(1998); Tacit (2002); The Colours they Bring (2005) and Hope and Honour (2008).
Performing on Trumpet/Flugel horn, Feya
Faku will be joined by saxophone player, Nhlanhla Mahlangu. The rhythm section features
Nduduzo Makhathini (piano), Thuto Motsemme (bass) and Ayanda Sikade (drums).
The Quintet will play favourites from his four albums, and some new material.
The concert takes place at 18h00 on November
2 at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Shepstone Building Level 2
at UKZN (Howard College). Doors open at 18h00. Entry fee is R50 (R35 pensioners
