The Durban based band Gangs of Ballet have
gone from opening act to the main act in no time with their recently released
EP. Released last month, their self-titled EP has seen three of their singles
dominating the charts on a variety of platforms countrywide and internationally.
Gangs of Ballet are made up of brothers
Brad and Josh Klynsmith with Jonathan Rich and Hardus de Beer. Their music,
which combines their fresh energy with their musically intriguing melodies and
arrangements, has a hauntingly anthemic sound which appeals both to the
musically-minded as well as to those merely seeking a fun musical experience.
Their sound cannot be pinned down to one specific genre but rather experiments
with an eclectic mix of alternative, melodic, anthemic, electronic and dance.
Touted as Durban’s favourite band, their
first single Breaking the Silence
enjoyed high rotation on national and regional radio stations, while also being
used in Cell C’s “Be” campaign. The second single and opening track of the EP This Love also went to #7 on 5FM and the
video is getting good rotation on MK.
Not content with this success, another
single Hello Sweet World is already
enjoying massive airplay on VH1 and has also been adopted as the opening theme
for VH1’s reality TV series Dr Drew’s
Rehab. The video has already had in excess of 25,000 views on YouTube in
the space of three weeks. Another song from the EP, Hurricane, is about to be used in one of the Dr Drew’s Rehab episodes.
Work is already underway on a full-length
debut album with EMI to be released in early 2013.
