The
70-member KwaZulu-Natal Youth Orchestra is comprised of the cream of young
musical talent in KZN. Open to KZN youth between the ages of 12 and 22, the
KZNYO aims to develop and nurture musical ability and orchestral playing in a
supportive environment.
Under
the baton of maestro Lyk Temmingh (Main Orchestra), and Cathy Peacock and
Lindsay Johnston (Shadow Orchestra), young musicians from a variety of
backgrounds meet every Friday afternoon at St Mary's, Kloof, to participate in
a classical orchestral environment that is conducive to their aspirations for
musical excellence. Members are tutored by individual instrumental experts and
perform their concerts with flair and accomplishment.
The
KNZYO have performed alongside the likes of the Estonian Chamber Orchestra, KZN
Youth Choir, KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Haringey Young Musicians and Big Band,
the Parletones, Soweto Music Conservatory, Busk Aid, as well as being invited
to perform at the prestigious Stellenbosch International Chamber Music
Festival.
During the
second half of 2013, the 40-member Main Orchestra will embark on a 10-day tour
to Paris (France) and Bremen (Germany), under the auspices of the KZNPO and as
part of a cultural exchange programme with these countries.
The
KZNYO is eager to recruit talented new players to ensure a youth orchestra of
the highest quality that can do the province proud in its overseas travels.
