SING ’IT

Building on last year’s success, Sanlam and LitNet have launched the second Sing ’it lyrics writing competition, which invites South Africans aged 18 years and older with a passion for songwriting to submit their lyrics in a bid to win R50,000 and more!

The competition is a partnership between lead sponsor Sanlam, organisers LitNet and media partner MK (DStv channel 324), and this year involves six top local artists or bands who will do the first round of judging and compose songs from their chosen lyrics.

The artists, who will also endorse the competition through Facebook and Twitter, are: Tumi and the Volume; Louise Carver; Zinkplaat; Zaki Ibrahim; ekhouvanjou, okay! and 3rd World Spectator. These artists will allow the Sanlam Sing ’it winners to truly let their words live, as the campaign slogan says.

All approved entries will be published on LitNet. Each band/artist will choose their favourite lyric from the pool of submissions, and compose and record a song from it. Five of these chosen lyrics will wins R5,000 cash. All six songs will be made available for the public to download via Facebook.
The song with the most votes becomes the overall winner and the lyric writer wins R50,000! That’s not all – the winning song will also be produced into a music video and the winner will have the opportunity of featuring in it.

André Kearns, sponsorship manager at Sanlam: “Sanlam is very proud to be a sponsor of this competition for the second year. As a truly South African company, we see the onus as being on us to provide a platform for our youth to be creative (and create music, in this case) that will be there for many years to come. Sing ’it also embodies Sanlam’s corporate message to ‘Start with what you hope for’. We believe that to realise your hopes and dreams you have to start somewhere, and the sooner you start the sooner you can reap the rewards.”

Gerdus Senekal, Sing ‘it project manager for LitNet adds:“Sanlam Sing ‘it offers an exciting platform through which you get a creative product that would not have been possible without the ‘amateur’, the fan’s, contribution. It’s great to see this collaboration between South African artists and the people that support them. The fan’s role in the music industry is perhaps too often understated, and we wanted to show that LitNet as a community truly does voice South African culture in a very tangible way. The entries that have been published on www.litnet.co.za so far are of impressive quality. There’s definitely a lot of creative energy in this country.”

Closing date for entries is December 21 2012. Entries can be submitted via www.facebook.com/singit.co.za or www.singit.co.za, or by SMSing lyrics to 45964 (Terms and conditions apply)
