The Playhouse Company, Durban, by
arrangement with DALRO, announces auditions for the production of the popular
musical West Side Story in Durban
during the festive season in 2013. The production will be directed by Ralph
Lawson and choreographed by Adele Blank.
Auditions will be held in Durban on December
13, 2012, at the Playhouse.
West
Side Story is based on a conception of Jerome
Robbins, book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen
Sondheim. The entire original production was directed and choreographed by
Jerome Robbins and originally produced on the Broadway stage by Robert E
Griffith and Harold S Prince by arrangement with Roger L. Stevens
The sophisticated music, extended dance
scenes and focus on social problems in West
Side Story marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein's
score for the musical includes Something's
Coming, Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight, Jet Song, I Feel Pretty, A Boy Like
That, One Hand, One Heart, Gee, Officer Krupke, and Cool.
The production calls for classically
trained dancers, singers and actors. Previous professional experience in
musical theatre is essential. Ladies need to bring high heel dance shoes and must
be able to dance in these. Proficiency in different accents is an advantage. Auditionees
must bring a headshot and full-length photograph, as well as a resumรจ to their
audition.
All artists to arrive by 08h30 to register
and must be available the whole day. The dance audition starts at 09h00.

Auditions will be held on December 13 in
studio 503 at The Playhouse Company in Durban from 09h00. Enter via stage door
in Acutt Street. Artists are requested to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start
in order to register.
Dance Audition: Dance auditions will take place first and
will be done in a group format.
Musical Audition: Perform a song either from West Side Story or in the style of West Side Story. The following songs are
suggested for those auditioning for specific characters, ie Tony: Something’s Coming and Maria; Maria: I Have a Love and I Feel
Pretty; Anita: A Boy Like That
and America; Riff: Cool; Bernardo/Sharks/Jets: The Jet Song; Girls: America.
Acting Audition: Prepare a one to
two-minute monologue reflecting any of the emotional content in the show. At
call backs, candidates will be asked to read from the script.
