The South African National Society (SANS), Green Heart City and eThekwini Municipality will present their third annual Farewell to the Old Year get-together on December 21.

The Boulevard Beret Accolades recognise trailblazers (aged 21 or over) who have contributed towards advancing the arts, heritage and ecology in the City of Durban and surrounds.

2012 Accolades will be conferred upon Werner Dannewitz (posthumous, conductor of KZN Youth Wind Band) and five trailblazers.

Founded in 1905, the South African National Society (SANS) is the oldest heritage and conservation society in South Africa. The society fosters the preservation of objects of historical interest and natural beauty.

Green Felt Hearts Poetry Arts Experience is a citizen-based organisation in association with Cycles 4 Social Justice (C4SJ) and Ecology & Cycling that encourages arts and poetry experiences around themes of ecology, sustainable living, fashion and cycling.

“One of the aims is to have everyone wearing a green felt heart as we move forward from COP17,” say the organisers. “The hearts will assist Durban in being affectionately known as Green Heart City. The plan is to establish an international Green Heart Movement originating from Durban. The organisation is registered with the World Poetry Movement. “

2012’s Farewell to the Old Year will feature the Deaf Pavement Poets – nature adventure poetry using sign language. There will also be a wind interlude so those attending are invited to bring harmonicas, flutes, accordions and drums.

Farewell to the Old Year will take place on December 21 from 12h00 to 14h00 on the Mayor’s open-air balcony of the Durban City Hall. Lunch will be served. Attendance confirmation is essential - email Sanabelle at
