(Fusion - collaborative Furniture. Wood and mixed
media)
Fusion is an exhibition by Sue Akerman,
Bruce Attwood and Gill Gerhardt which opens in the Main Exhibition Room of the
Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on December 13 at 18h00.
Each of these artists brought their
expertise to this exhibition which features interesting interpretations of
media. Sue Akerman is an innovative fibre artist, Bruce Attwood does unusual
wood work and Gill Gerhardt creates unique designs. The ideas behind Fusion were to be playful and fun,
provide honesty in feedback and in how they share ideas or improved on one’s
idea as well as to display a commitment to the work.
The exhibition is the result of months of
hard work and brainstorming on concepts and designs towards the final product.
The ideas and sketches were shared by all three artists with additions and
suggestion being made until a consensus is reached before declaring the work as
‘finished’.
This is what the artists say of their work: “We
had begun to work on the very edge of the so-called ‘art piece’ –digging into
it and finding the form, texture, light and shadow that we needed to enhance
our work. The result is a number of outrageously different ‘furniture pieces’
made from several kinds of wood, fibres, beads, sand-blasted glass panels and
other interesting materials.’
There will be a walkabout of the exhibition
on December 14 from 11h00 to 12h00.
Fusion closes on January 27, 2013, at
17h00. The
Tatham Art Gallery is situated opposite the Town Hall in Chief Albert Luthuli
Street, Pietermaritzburg. Safe parking with car guard available on the Church street side of the
Gallery. More information on 033 392 2801.
