GARY THOMAS FOR SPIGA

Often dubbed the “hardest working solo artist in South Africa”, Gary Thomas has recently returned from a highly successful two-month European tour playing packed out shows in 11 cities across Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England, The Czech Republic and Turkey.

His new album Midnight Atlas was launched at a sold-out run at The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in June 2012.

The Festival magazine, Cue, reviewed the album thus: "He has taken the various elements of contrasting musical genres and combined them into something bafflingly brilliant...you have to remind yourself that it is all coming from just one person” while The Mercury dubbed him “A superb guitarist”.

Gary Thomas was born in Durban in 1983 and relocated to Cape Town in 2006. After studying Classical Guitar in school he completed a music degree at The University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2005, majoring in Jazz guitar. Upon moving to Cape Town in 2006, he recorded his first album, Wooden Boxes and Thought Hunting, which was officially released in 2009.

2010 saw the release of the hugely successful Contraption Distoria, with the single Walls and Floors gaining tremendous airplay on radio and television. The instrumental track AWDFH, another crowd favourite, combines intricate finger picking and violently energetic strumming.

Gary Thomas will appear live at Upstairs @ Spiga on December 28 at 20h00 (doors open at 18hoo). Entrance R50. Albums will be on sale. Upstairs @ Spiga is situated at 200 Florida Road in Durban. Bookings on 087 941 4525.
