Dizzy Dragonfly recently held auditions for their new children’s puppet
show, Inkonyane Engenegama (The Calf
With No Name).
Dizzy
Dragonfly is a relatively small and new Durban arts production company. It has
produced several adult shows, and also two children’s shows: the multi-award
winning Fantastical Flea Circus, and
also iPuppeti.
The
organisation is in the process of launching their latest children’s show, The Calf With No Name, which will have
an English and also an isiZulu version (Inkonyane
Engenegama). It is a heartwarming story, directed by Mpume Mthombeni,
written by Clinton Marius, which is about a young Zulu herd boy who learns that
the little calf he loves is to become a gift for the king. It is about Nguni
cattle and their role in African society, growing up, honesty, and doing the
right thing.
Dizzy
Dragonfly is looking for five performers who can perform in both English and
isiZulu, and are comfortable performing for children, and with puppets. While
previous experience working with puppets is an advantage, it is not essential,
as they can be trained in this skill.
Because Dizzy
Dragonfly is a small company that operates without funding, all projects work on
a profit-share basis. This means that artists would be given money for
transport to and from rehearsals, and a little amount for lunch every day
during rehearsals. Artists would then receive payment in the form of a share of
the profits. (This would work out to 10%, each, of door sales, after expenses
are subtracted.)
The opening
theatre run is the isiZulu version to run from February 5 to 9, 2013, at Stable
Theatre. The idea is to rehearse for two weeks toward the end of January. After
this initial run the show will be booked for any other venues, schools or
festivals such as the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
