“A little last minute
Christmas bonsela came our way when Oude Meester Brandy asked for a party and
at the same time one of our favourite guitarists received his first shipment of
the CD Life Goes Round,” says Rainbow
Restaurant co-owner Neil Comfort. “This marks his debut as a solo artist. Mdu
Mahlobo has performed on the Rainbow stage on many occasions over the years
with acts such as Bongani Nkwanyana, Brian Thusi's big band and the Umkhumbane
Jazz Ensemble.
“Thanks to producer Malcolm Nhleko at Maltre Productions he
now has an 11 track album of his own out that is wowing everyone that hears it,”
adds Comfort. “I gave the guys from The Muffinz a copy last weekend and they
were quickly begging for an opportunity to perform with him the next time they
hit the east coast.”
Performing with Mahlobo will be Luyolo Nakasa on drums, Talent
Mbatha on bass and Tumi Komako on keyboards. The opening act is Cocus, a traditional
dance and music trio featuring Sihle Khwela and Sihle Zulu on vocals plus
Malungi on guitar. Malungi is known to the Rainbow audience through his
performances as maskanda guitarist in Busi Mhlongo's band and keyboardist for
Shabalala Rhythm.
The Oude Meester concert takes place on December 23 at
14h00. Doors open at 13h00. Tickets R30.
The first event in 2013 is expected to take place on January
20 and will feature Vieux Farka Toure Quartet led by the son of legendary
Malian guitarist, Ali Farka Toure, for an exclusive performance presented in
partnership with Alliance Française de Durban and the French Institute of
Southern Africa.
