Violinist Jacqueline Wedderburn-Maxwell
will join pianist Christopher Duigan for a concert titled Playing with Mandela, at The Mandela Capture Site in the
KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on Saturday. They will be playing music by Ludwig von
Beethoven, Karen Khachaturian, Henryk Wieniawski and Frederic Chopin.
Jacqueline Wedderburn-Maxwell (19) made her
debut with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra at the tender age of nine.
A year later, she was awarded a full scholarship to study in England at the
Yehudi Menuhin School for musically gifted children, under Natalie Boyarsky. On
returning to South Africa in 2006, she resumed her studies with Professor Jack
de Wet. She is currently a student of Pieter Schoeman, leader of the London
Philharmonic Orchestra, and is completing her final year BMus (Hons) at the
Trinity College of Music in London.
Wedderburn-Maxwell has performed with all
the major symphony orchestras in South Africa and her repertoire includes
Bruch, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Vieuxtemps. She is completing her final year
BMus (Hons) at the Trinity College of Music in London and is considered one of
the finest young violinists South Africa has ever produced.
Christopher Duigan is widely regarded as
one of the leading South African classical concert pianists. An official
Steinway Pianist, he has been based in the Midlands for the last 16 years. He
has experimented with a unique approach to programming and performance strategy
that seeks to break boundaries between various genres.
His ongoing concert series, under the name
Music Revival, has grown to encompass a widely recognised “brand” that now
presents over 80 performances annually, ranging from intimate soirées in his
home studio to major performances by the KZNPO in Pietermaritzburg, the concert
series at The Witness Hilton Art Festival and the Classic Music Festival in
Franschhoek.
Playing
with Mandela takes place on December 15 at 19h00 at
The Shed Theatre at The Mandela Capture Site on the R103 at Lions River in the
KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Tickets R110 (R160 for a dinner curry afterwards from 20h15 at the Truth Café).
