Rainbow Restaurant's 31st birthday concert on
December 16 will feature the Durban Gospel Choir and The Muffinz presented by
Castle Lite.
“About two thirds of the Durban Gospel
Choir managed to join us at our birthday concert last year - the rest were off
auditioning for Idols,” says co-owner
Neil Comfort. “Despite being a few members short, their performance set the
afternoon up perfectly as we looked back on the preceding three decades of
South African music at the Rainbow; their rendition of Nkosi Sikelele iAfrika having the 300 strong audience up on their
feet and feeling extremely proud to be South African.
A highlight for the choir in 2012 was a
feature performance with Idols winner
Khaya Mthethwa at the ICC's 15th birthday celebrations. For 2013, they have
been invited to perform at the London Gospel Choir's 30th anniversary concert,
for which they are currently seeking financial assistance.
“For this year’s Rainbow celebration, we
have decided to look to the future of South African music and this decision was
in no small way influenced by a rather unheralded showcase that saw The Muffinz
take to our stage in October,” adds Comfort. “Simply put, the 150 people that
were in attendance were gob smacked by this five piece line-up of hip young men
from Joburg. Suffice to say that we were not surprised to hear that within a
month of that, their first public performance in KZN, they were confirmed for
Splashy Fen 2013.
"The five young musicians make a
refreshing change from the usual run of the mill rappers and house DJs, who are
currently dominating the popular music scene, in that they play real
instruments, and they play them well. Added to that is all five musicians are
great singers in their different genres of expertise.”
Just in 2012 the group have garnered the
following awards: Standard Bank Ovation Award, Feather Award for Musician of
the Year and an ImpACT Award for Music and Singing from the Arts and Culture
Trust.
“This is your chance to see The Muffinz up
close and personal before the big festival stages that they are destined for put
up the crowd control barriers!” concludes Comfort.
