(“Baobab
Tree” - Pencil on paper by Vincent Reid)
The Zulu-lulu Art House at Piggly Wiggly Country
Village on the Midlands Meander at Lion’s River presents Khuliswe Ekhaya, a celebration of homegrown art featuring new work
by Trayci Tompkins (ceramics), Vincent Reid (pencil on paper) and Floris van
Zyl (oil on canvas)
Celebrating the first 'invited artist
exhibition' at Zulu-lulu Art House, the exhibition features three different
mediums of art from three similar artists who share a passion for life around
them, coupled with contrasts in texture, shape and form.
Vincent Reid (pencil on paper), Floris van
Zyl (oil on canvas) and Trayci Tompkins (hand-built ceramic pots and sculpture)
left behind successful careers in media and design to follow their passions of
earning a living from their art.
Floris van Zyl brings to his art the
analytical eye of a graphic designer but tempers this formality with a loose,
almost reckless method of applying paint to his canvas. Before making a mark he
determines what he calls the subject's emotional climate. "It is more a
feeling than anything else" states Floris who finds his influence in his
own life, and the observation of the life of others.
A similar interpretation is shared by ceramic
artist Trayci Tompkins, whose series of 'dogs on chairs' sculpture is less about
the breed type and more about the humorous emotion captured in each piece. Her work is rich in texture and she makes
full use of various firing methods both in complex glazing and simple sawdust
firings.
For Vincent Reid, his choice of medium in
graphite allows him to express the deep contrast and texture of his subject. Complex
layering, shading and scratching into the surface of the paper allows Vincent
to work with the wonders of light in nature that he finds so inspiring.
