INKONYANE ENGENEGAMA

(Mpume Mthombeni and Clinton Marius)

Presented by Dizzy Dragonfly in association with Stable Theatre, Inkonyane Engenegama, a heart-warming new children’s play, runs at Stable Theatre in Durban from February 12 to 16. The production is supported by the KZN Department of Arts and Culture, and Ethekwini Municipality.

Cattle are an integral part of traditional Zulu culture and status in a community is measured by the condition and number of livestock a family owns. Each animal is named and identified by its markings, and those that are pure white or black are usually given up into the care of the King, who is regarded as the true custodian of these rare beasts.

Now Durban-based production company, Dizzy Dragonfly is set to educate youngsters about Nguni cattle in a new children’s play, Inkonyane Engenegama (The Calf with No Name).

Created by award-winning writer, Clinton Marius, the production is translated into isiZulu and directed by one of KZN’s leading actresses, Mpume Mthombeni, who was previously seen in Tin Bucket Drum, iPuppeti, The Game, Amagama Amathathu, Rain, Macbeth, Othello and Godspell. She is well-known for her much-loved portrayal of Regina in the hit radio soapie, Lollipop Lane.

The story traces the journey a young Zulu boy must take in order to set right a terrible wrong that he has committed. The play teaches children about honesty and taking responsibility for one’s actions. Through the use of beautiful puppets created by Clinton Marius, Inkonyane Engenegama will delight and intrigue youngsters of all ages.

Featuring Sifiso Cele, Musa Ntuli, Noluthando Kubeka and Qaphela Makhoba, this hour-long treat runs at Stable Theatre at 10h00 from March 12 to16. Tickets R25 (R20 for block bookings of 20 or more).  To book or for more information, call Stable Theatre on 031 309 2513.
