artSPACEdurban presents a group exhibition of smartphone
camera images.
A new report finds that certain activities that people do on
a cellphone, like taking a picture and sending an e-mail, have increased
significantly in the last few years. …
“Cell users now treat their gadget as a body appendage,”
said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center, in a statement. “There is
striking growth in the number of people who are taking advantage of the growing
number of functions that these phones can perform, and there isn’t much
evidence yet that the pace of change is slowing down.” (Refer http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/26/pew-internet-study-texting/?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20121127])
“Taking pictures with a smartphone (or a cellphone that has
a camera) has become so popular, it even has its own name: iPhoneography, or
smartphoneography for those who do not own an Apple mobile phone. Users have
been taking a lot of cool pix on their phones and now would like others to see
them besides on Instagram and other sites and have a chance to sell them in a
gallery environment,” says Karen Bradkte of artSPACEdurban.
“We coined the term "phoneography" to open the
field up to all cellphone with cameras (aka Androids) users,” she explains. “We
want this exhibition to be of extremely high quality, creativity and
originality. Use of applications and computer editing is encouraged! Any and
all images will be accepted so let your imaginations run wild. Whatever you do,
just have fun!”
To enter the exhibition you will need to make works that fit
the format of 12cm x 12cm or 24 x 12cm Supawood blocks onto which the image(s)
you will mount. These blocks are the entry fee for the exhibition and will cost
R20 per 12 x 12cm block and R30 per 24 x 12cm block.
“If you are unsure of how to get the images ready and onto
the blocks we will have instructions at the gallery when you pick up your
block(s),” says Bradtke. “You may buy more than one block and enter more than
one work. We encourage you to make this your showcase and thus use a number of
blocks to create an individual theme or installation.”
The cost for 10 12 x 12cm blocks is R150 and for 20 blocks
is R250. And the cost for 10 24 x 12cm blocks is R250 and for 20 blocks is
R400. In addition, the gallery will charge a commission on sales of 20%, which
is well below the regular rate. The sale price of each block is set: 12 x 12cm
at R100 each and 24 x 12cm at R200 each.
Blocks can be picked up from artSPACE durban. Delivery of
the finished works, which must be ready for hanging, is on or before January 19
during gallery hours.
