Tumelo Khoza and Ntando Mlambo celebrate the 10th anniversary of their poetry event. (Review by Philisiwe Sithole)

Cup O Thought is a monthly event that has been around for almost year and this is the 10th show, founded by a respected duo in the field of poetry, Tumelo Khoza and Ntando Mlambo are known for believing in the importance of creating platform for poets and vocalists. Cup O' Thought is sponsored by Alliance Française. Spoken word is a small niche in the soil of Durban, yet it’s becoming more popular in the audience’s radar.

In a pretty garden of Alliance Française and cosy weather of Durban, Cup O' Thought presents up and coming as well as well-known poets from South African and around the world to grace the stage with their talents. The show is divided into three segments, Open Mike Slot, Main Line-Up and finishing with Slam to create flavour and signature.

Yesterday, I had the great pleasure to witness fresh brewed talent of message-driven poetry. I have to mention one of the poets in the Open Mike - Radwin van Wyk - who graced and blessed the audience with the honesty of his poem which touched on the realities of social issues. His poem looks into a rapist's perspective.

On the Main Line-Up Cup, O' Thought presented a poet from Johannesburg who gave a preview of his show that will be presented shortly at the Playhouse. He is an intelligent performer. His poetry is deep, concise with punchlines. A hip hop group called No way out, and a South African poet who was a semi-finalist of South Africa 's Got Talent who goes by the name of Bulletman. A conceptualizing poet, most of his poetry is about love and what was interesting about him is that he uses his disorder to his advantage which was beautiful to watch. Other poets included Inaudible, Mbali Vilakazi and Ground Zhero.

I would advise people to support Cup O' Thought. The next show is on March 2. To be part of the event contact Tumelo Khoza on 083 633 2707. – Philisiwe Sithole
