The Midlands Arts and Craft Society (MACS) in
Pietermaritzburg offers an extensive and varied programme of workshops for
2013. These workshops will be facilitated by the incomparable fibre artist Jutta
Faulds and additional teachers will be brought in for different courses to work
with her.
February 5 to 7: BASIC DYEING TECHNOLOGY - using
fibre reactive dyes on fabric. Covering
resist techniques as well as discharge.
March 14 to 16: HANDS-ON COLOUR - where and
how to find the road to rich colour combination, avoiding the extremes of
migraine inducing vs MUD … and beyond left-brain overload we will play with the
emotional power which colour can have. he
course will consist of short exercises which will form a small reference book
at the end.
April 11 to 13: INTRODUCTION TO PAPER
MAKING - the emphasis here will be on RECYCLING the junk paper we all seem to
accumulate daily. Learn how this can be
transformed into something beautiful.
May 13 to 15: FABRIC DYEING WITH FIBER
REACTIVE DYES - going the liberated way, using different ways and methods of
applying the dyes, to create exciting surfaces and enjoying the therapeutic
effects of being creative at the same time. (Dyes/fabrics available at MACS
should you need them or bring your own).
June 20 to 22: BLOCK PRINTING on paper and
fabric, using traditional Indian blocks as well as “found” objects. Focus will be on “pattern” and surface
“design” (composition).
July 11 to 13: PAPER MAKING 3D - i.e.
embossing and moulding into vessels.
Recycled paper given new purpose.
This will be a hands-on experimental “work”shop.
August 5 to 7: FABRIC DYEING AND BEYOND,
mixing techniques and creating multi layered cloth, with overprinting and
over-dyeing experimentation. NB. Not for beginners!
September 16 to 18: STENCILLING:
CUTTING/DESIGNING YOUR OWN and working into “unresolved” fabrics from other
workshops. This is a hands-on workshop.
October 10 to 12: PAPER DECORATION/SURFACE
DESIGN incorporating dyeing, painting, block printing, stencilling and what
have you, on LARGE sheets of paper (i.e. gift wrap?). Materials: MACS will
provide basics, bring what you have. Paper etc for sale, too.
All of the above workshops cost R395 (R300 MACS
members). NB. This programme is subject to change.
A further workshop is planned for April 18
to 20: BOOKBINDING - this ancient and well respected craft/skill is having a
re-birth, so to speak. It can be enjoyed
at whatever level you wish to operate, and will enhance your appreciation of
the skill of those who went before us. The tutor will be Estelle
Liebenberg-Barkhuizen. Cost: R375 (R300 MACS members) and materials and/or
basic tool kit (you will be given details when you book!). All requirements are available at MACS or
bring your own!
