(Steve Newman)
Coming up in the Maritzburg Musician’s Club
at the Red Door in Pietermaritzburg next week will be Steve Newman, Matt Woosey
and Peter Tennant.
Needing very little introduction to music
lovers, Steve Newman is an accomplished South African acoustic guitarist, and
was a founder member of the popular African group Tananas. For 30 years, he has
been collaborating with fellow South African guitarist, Tony Cox. Steve has
played at music festivals on most continents and is one of the most uniquely
gifted guitarists to come out of South Africa.
Matt
Woosey is a blues guitarist, singer and
songwriter currently on tour from the UK. During the last eight years, Matt has
toured the UK and Europe non-stop, cementing his reputation as one of the
hardest working musicians around. Matt is a young contemporary blues artists
from the West Midlands, UK, who combines an explosive slap-and-pick right-hand
guitar technique with big-range blues vocals. Following his success at the
world famous Ronnie Scott’s Club in London, Matt was interviewed by Sky News
and appeared on TV in the Netherlands. He has played some of the largest blues
festivals in Belgium, France and Holland.
Supporting the likes of Gerry Macavoy (Rory
Gallagher), Mark Flannigan (Jools Holland) and Jan Akkerman (Focus), Matt has
steadily built up a following which he hopes to capitalise on for the launch of
his recently-released new album, On the
Waggon. Matt will be performing solo and will play material spanning his
first albums, including On The Waggon.
Getting the evening off to a vibey start
will be guitarist Peter Tennant who has
been a staunch supporter of music in Pietermaritzburg. Classic and
Flamenco styles are his forte.
The performance takes place at The Red Door
on February 26 at 20h00. Door charge will be R50. The home of the Maritzburg
Musicians Club, The Red Door is situated in Quarry Rd, off Victoria Road, in
Pietermaritzburg. Car guards on duty. More information from Roger O’Neill on
