Tonight, the Naledi Theatre Awards celebrated its 10th
presentation. Now recognised as the premier awards event on the Gauteng theatre
calendar, the Naledis’ mission is to recognise and reward excellence in the
performing arts, to raise the profile of live theatre and to create awareness
of the abundance of talent alive and well on South African stages.
The Naledis have honoured 57 Lifetime Achievers, over 2,000
nominees and given 250 awards.
This evening’s presentation covered all mainstream
professional productions staged from January 1 to December 1, 2012.
For the first time, KwaZulu-Natal was strongly represented in
no less than 19 nominations pertaining to three productions.
These covered two shows from KickstArt directed by Steven
Stead and designed by Greg King:
- the drama Red produced
by KickstArt in association with the National Arts Festival and the Old Mutual
Theatre on the Square
- the musical Cabaret
produced by Pieter Toerien and KickstArt.
The third production with strong KZN links was Abnormal Loads produced by The Market
Theatre in association with Standard Bank and Think Theatre written by Neil
Coppen, directed by Neil Coppen and Janna Ramos-Violante.
These productions won five out of the 19 KZN nominations.
This was a good achievement, considering the stiff competition:
1. Best Theatre Lighting Design (sponsored by Chauvet): Tina
le Roux for Abnormal Loads
2. Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role/Cameo:
Jeremy Richard for Red
3. Best Performance in a Musical (Female): Samantha Peo for Cabaret
4. Best New South African Script (Musical or Play): Abnormal Loads
5. Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role (Play):
Michael Richard for Red
