BRENDA MTHAMBO WITH HEELS OVER HEAD

(Brenda Mtambo)

Brenda Mtambo is a Johannesburg-based vocalist with Durban as her home town who has been referred to as Afro-Soul powerhouse. Local all-female jazz band Heels over Head will be backing her and performing an opening set at The Jazzy Rainbow in Morningside on March 29.

Brenda Mtambo (from Umlazi) believes in the power of music to move, inspire and entertain her fans. Telling stories through her musical works, one can only sit back and listen to this Afro-Soul powerhouse. Diversity is something that comes naturally to her as she wants to speak not only to Africa but the World. The language of music is one that can be heard by not even understanding what is sung, but rather the melodies that speak to the heart. A thread of pop and soft rock make their way into the sounds of Brenda Mtambo, which allows variety in her writing.

At the tender age of five, she began belting out notes. As she entered her teens, she started singing choral music which occupied her time for five years until the end of high school. After initiating a music project called Sisters of Joy, she decided that it was time to take a big leap towards fulfilling her dreams.

She moved to Johannesburg where she joined multi award winner gospel group Joyous Celebration. As a member she recorded and toured Africa on Joyous Celebration Albums 11, 12, 13 and 14, taking lead performing roles. She has worked closely on projects, tours and DVD recordings with the likes of Lira, Ntokozo Mbambo, Cece Winans, Sbongile Khumalo, Swazi Dlamini, Jabu Hlongwane, Jay Hlungwane, Thandiswa Mazwai, Judith Sephuma, Hugh Masekela, Brian Thusi, Jonas Gwangwa and TD Jakes.

Joining Brenda Mtambo on stage will be local all-female jazz band Heels over Head. Renowned for their sparkling stage presence, energy and passion, this will definitely make a great show.

The performance takes place at the Jazzy Rainbow, Smiso Nkwanyana (ex- Goble Road), Morningside on March 29 at 19h00. Tickets R100 available at the door (doors open at 19h00)
