(Megan
Kelly as Mayzie La Bird)
How often does a show come to
Pietermaritzburg that everyone from the very young to grannies and grandpas can
enjoy?
Seussical
the Musical is outrageous family fun. Based on the
well-loved stories and characters of Dr Seuss, it will appeal to younger
children but with Monty Python’s Eric
Idle partially responsible for the script, there are plenty of jokes thrown in
for young adults and parents. Epworth High School will present this delightful
musical by Tony award-winning partnership of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens
at the Hexagon Theatre, UKZN from March 14 to 16.
So, join the Cat in the Hat as he takes a
journey into the fantastical world of Dr Seuss. Meet Horton the Elephant, who
discovers an entire small world floating by, out of control, on a speck of
dust. This is the home of the Whos, including Jojo - a Who whose ‘thinks’ defy
description. Horton and Jojo have to find a way to save the Whos from danger.
But Horton faces another challenge … he’s been left alone to guard an
incubating egg, abandoned by Mayzie La Bird. Caught between the dust speck and
his incubating egg, Horton feels truly alone in the universe, but while he
faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and ends up on trial, the intrepid Gertrude
Mc Fuzz never loses faith in him.
The dynamic cast of over 30 is lead by
talented singers Kaiti Faul as the Cat, Nonji Ndwandwe (Jojo), Krissie Wepener
(Horton), Megan Kelly (Mayzie la Bird), Mini Buthelezi (The Sour Kangaroo) and
Sarah Mayne as Gertrude Mc Fuzz.
The Musical Director of the Epworth
production is Johan Grobler, who recently came second in the prestigious national
Len van Zyl conducting competition in Cape Town. The production team is Diana
Wilson, Madeline Oellermann and Elizabeth Retief. Lighting and sound design are
by Marcus Henning of the Hexagon Theatre and set design by Shan Jacobs and
Saxon Kirton.
