With the launch of The
Rockville 2069 CD and Graphic Novel in August 2012, the stage is set for
the next phase in the development of the Rockville 2069 project.
Rockville 2069
will come to life on stage during a national tour of the stage show production
due to open in Pretoria at the SA State Theatre on June 27 before going on to
perform in Durban, Bloemfontein and Cape Town
Rockville 2069 is
a futuristic rock musical set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world
and is steeped in the philosophies that characterise the rebellion of the 60’s,
the 70’s and those that are currently shaping our world. The creative
brainchild of composer Johnny Ray, who wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics
and script with Bruno Paiolo, Rockville 2069 is a relevant and contemporary
rock musical set to create a new shift in this genre. It’s a fully orchestrated
production that sees over 60 artists and musicians from different cultural and
musical backgrounds collaborate to bring a new thrilling voice to the rock
musical scene.
The forthcoming stage show version of Rockville 2069 will be
directed by Gavin Wright (The Fresh Theatre Company), with musical direction by
Bryan Schimmel (Jersey Boys, Dreamgirls, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Rent) and
choreography by Celeste Botha (Jazzart Dance Theatre).
Auditions for this new South African composed rock musical
will be held at the Joburg Theatre on April 8 and 9.
Actors with strong rock voices and who also move well are
encouraged to audition. Candidates are requested to prepare a rock song from
the period between 1970 and 1990 that shows off their range, rock singing
capability and acting ability. They are requested to bring sheet music, a
headshot and CV. An accompanist will be provided. Absolutely no backing tracks
will be permitted.
If applicants are able to play guitar they should bring
their instruments with them.
Rehearsals will take place from June 3 to 26, with
performances at the Pretoria State Theatre from June 27 to 29. Rehearsals and
performances at The Playhouse in Durban are from July 16 to 22 and at the Sand
Du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein from October 21 to 27. Dates in 2014 for
Cape Town are still to be announced.
