SA’s biggest urban radio station, 99.2 YFM, have announced
their 2013 line-up with a fresh and dynamic shift in musical direction moving
forward.
In line with their ongoing vision to develop and create a
platform for fresh young talent, YFM launched several new faces in 2012 alongside
the new YTKO music mix format, helping to propel the careers of new upcoming
young talent, including YTKO DJ’s Shimza, ZanD and Josi Chave. Having
introduced the market to a new era in DJ culture, YTKO sparked huge interest
and featured several high profile local and guest DJ’s over the last 12 months.
This year YFM will further showcase young talent and develop
a few new Y Academy personalities including Mantsoe (co-presenter on Ankletap’s
mid morning show) and Sol Phenduka (co-presenter on the breakfast show with Mo
Flava) and also Smash Afrika (co-presenter of The Afternoon Drive with Tholi B). These emerging personalities will
feature more prominently on the YFM airwaves as part of long-terms plans for
them to occupy more prime radio spots.
Having joined the team in 2012, the multi-talented Thando
Thabethe will move into her own weekend slot hosting the 12noon to 15h00 show.
Bonang Matheba will take on the new role as presenter and producer of the Entertainment at Large feature. The show
will deliver exciting news from local and international red-carpet features, which
will include interviews and inserts. Bonang will also be the new presenter of
the Hot 99 R&B, which airs
weekly.
The prime focus at YFM in 2013, however, will be the music
with the evolution of a new current global sound, featuring Dubstep as a core
new music genre. Dubstep is a form of electronic dance music which originated
from various musical genres including drum n bass, 2 step garage, broken beat
and even dub reggae, now made popular globally by Baauer’s The Harlem Shake. The Kwaito
Hot 99 will be replaced by the Dubstep
Hot 99, and in addition Dubstep music will be playlisted across the station.
