(Just
Jinjer heads the festival line-up)
The hills around Baynesfield, on the
outskirts of Pietermaritzburg, will come alive at the end of the month with the
sounds of some of the province’s favourite musicians. A music fest with a
legend behind its name, Poet’s Porch Music Fest promises a day of music and
stalls, fun, food and farming hospitality.
Sponsored by Illovo Sugar South Africa and
hosted at the Baynesfield Farmers Club, the second Poet’s Porch festival
promises non-stop entertainment for all ages, with professional and amateur
performers, talented individuals and groups, food and refreshments, a variety
of stalls and limited camping available by prior arrangement.
Just Jinjer, one of SA’s top selling
contemporary rock groups, recently returned from eight years in California,
will head the festival line-up on April 27. The group has performed and toured
with U2, Counting Crows and Def Leppard. It currently comprises the gifted Ard
Matthews (vocals and acoustic guitar), Brent Harris (drums and vocals) and
Denholm Harding (bass and vocals).
Kicking off at 10h30 and playing until
late, the line-up also includes SA Idols Top 10 performer Erin Fourie, rock
group Catlike Thieves, KZN’s favourite festive music-makers The Hairy Legged
Lentil Eaters, the Gloucester Blues Project, Angus Burns and Friends, Knights
of Insanity and some of the province’s top school bands - from Kearsney
College, Maritzburg College and Voortrekker.
Darrell de Wet, marketing manager of Illovo
Sugar South Africa, said the Baynesfield Farmers Club was a crucial facility to
the local farming community. “Illovo is proud to be associated with this well
organised community-driven event, which generates valuable revenue for the club
and community,” he said.
Catlike Thieves has carved out a place
somewhere between old-school rock and pop, taking the rules of rock ‘n roll,
and turning it on its head. They have performed at most of SA’s major music
festivals (Splashy Fen, White Mountain, Oppikoppi), at the Mr Price Pro, with
the Parlotones and Zebra and Giraffe. They will entertain from 19h00.
Popular for more than a decade, Idols 2011
Top 10 contestant Erin Fourie has returned to her roots, performing acoustic
folk whilst studying for her Master’s degree in Drama. She will take the stage
at 17h00 whilst Angus Burns and Friends promise to entertain with their
inimitable style of acoustic Celtic rock.
From renditions of blues standards to more
unclassifiable originals, the Gloucester Blues’s emotionally charged lyrics and
poignant compositions appeal to a wide-ranging audience. They have performed at
Splashy Fen and the International Blues Festival in Durban, as well as with Dan
Patlansky, Southern Gypsey Queen and Josie Field – and will perform at Poet’s
Porch from 16h00.
Knights of Insanity, a fresh young band
which won last year’s Battle of the Bands at the Kearsney College Upbeat
Festival, promises to rock the stage with their amalgamation of original rock
and blues. Also on the programme are folk artists Los Locos and Tyler &
Pierre, Minor Adjustments playing popular ‘oldies’, blue grass specialists The
Bandits with covers performed by Bifocals.
Take a blanket and chair, and enjoy a day of
warm farming hospitality. The Baynesfield community will prove their
organisational talents extend beyond ripening sugar cane, reaping cabbages, fattening
pigs and logging timber. Sponsors Illovo Sugar will have a stall selling their
delicious and sought-after pancakes; together with many other food and
refreshment outlets.
