UKZN School of Arts: Music Discipline proudly
presents the Fontana Trio in Howard College Theatre on April 29.
The group specialises in new musical
elements. Their programme comprises contemporary works, Baroque\Renaissance music
interpreted in new ways with special formation including a baroque trombone as
well as the alto and bass flute. The performers are Ross Butcher; Hieronymus
Schädler and Markus Hochuli.
Ross Butcher is a solo trombonist for the
Mannheim Philharmonic and a frequent extra-player with the Lausanne Chamber
Orchertra, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, Symphonieta of Lausanne, Symphonieta
of Geneva and the Orchestre Symphonique de Jura. He was also the second
trombone of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic for two years. He has performed as a
soloist with the KZNPO and the Elite Brass Band of Geneva. He is responsible
for the administration of the Moya trombones; a successful trombone quartet and
also runs his own Dixieland band.
Hieronymus Schädler works as a flautist (a
specialist in all types of flutes from bass-flute to piccolo), improviser and
composer. He studied in Paris and Zurich graduating with a pedagogical and
concert diploma and now gives concerts around the world. He composes chamber
music and incidental music for several plays for the Theater am Kirchplatz in
Schaan. His activity is documented in many CD- and radio-productions.
Markus Hochuli studied with Christoph
Jäggin (Winterthur) and Prof. Wilhelm Bruck (Karlsruhe) and has played in solo
recitals and various chamber ensembles in Switzerland and abroad. His
willingness to undertake unusual assignments has also led him to the electric
guitar, the theorbo, the banjo and related instruments. Some of the leading
composers he has worked with are Klaus Huber, Toshio Hosokawa, Dieter Schnebel,
Mariano Etkin and Fred Frith. In 2001 and 2006 he received a grant from the
Aargauer Kuratorium for his artistic work. Since 1991 he has taught at the
Conservatory and the University of the Arts in Zurich.
The Fontana Trio will perform on April 29
from 12h15 to 13h00 in Howard College Theatre. Entrance to lunch-hour concerts
