A participant in
the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, the ArtKaroo gallery holds exhibitions
throughout the year, focusing on fine art from the Karoo. Housed in a
beautifully renovated sandstone cottage, the gallery sells unique pieces, large
and small, inspired by this remarkable, semi-desert area.
As always, ArtKaroo is playing a very active role in
this year's Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees,
with four major events AND exhibitions across two venues in Oudtshoorn.
As part of its
guest artist programme, ArtKaroo is hosting a solo exhibition by gifted Durban fine
artist Grace Kotze who describes her collection of paintings as forming “part
of my emotional journey in which I use the human form, landscapes and insects
as communicative tools...
“I draw greatly
from the natural world,” Kotze continues, ”but then interpret it through my
love of paint and the great pull of the emotive. This collection of paintings
form part of my emotional journey in which I use the human form, landscapes and
insects as communicative tools. The images depicted on this show are filtered
through my emotional “intent”. Two of the main elements I use in order to communicate
an emotional intent are my use of tone and colour. I love manipulating the way
light falls on an image, veiling areas and revealing others as important.
Changing colour also alters the emotional tenure of a work and is a means of
making the image my own.
"As a painter,”
Kotze adds, “we are equipped with a multitude of magical tools with which to
investigate our internal and external worlds. I feel very fortunate to be an
artist with such a challenging and enriching means with which to unravel my
understanding of my bearings.”
