Intermissions is a series of vignettes, devised and performed by 2nd and 3rd year
students from UKZN Pietermaritzburg’s Drama and Performance Studies department. Taking their cue
from the paintings of surrealist artist, Rene Magritte, each vignette depicts
an original story inspired by the painter’s disturbing, witty and often
confusing paintings.
Told in a variety of styles, the plays
explore themes of love, loss, deception and possession. A mob boss orders a hit
– to disastrous consequence. A minister makes a deal with the Devil. A young
woman appears possessed. A gown becomes a vessel of desire and despair. A group
of nuns conceal a troubling secret and in the end, what was Magritte really on
about?
Directed by Louise Buchler, Intermissions runs at the Hexagon Studio Theatre in
Pietermaritzburg from April 24 to 26 at 18h30. Tickets R30 (R20 for students/seniors)
at the door only. Enquiries to 033 260 5537 or email: hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
