ROCKING THE GREATEST HITS

(Chillie Stent, Dale Wardell , Krystle T, Sebastian Gilchrist and Shermin Bhugalu)

Head for Rhumbelow for a good rocking party. (Review by Keith Millar)

If you are in the mood for a good rocking party with some exciting, foot stomping, sing along rock music, the Rhumbelow is the place to go this week-end.

The entertainment will be provided by the very talented Krystle T and the Band who play a variety of great music ranging from the 60’s to today. You will hear, amongst others, songs from Bon Jovi, Amy Whitehouse, Roy Orberson, Tina Turner, Meatloaf, The Cranberries, Adele, Credence Clearwater Revival, Pink, Don McLean and Elvis.

Krystle has a wonderful voice. It is rich and powerful and has the range to tackle most genres of music. She has surrounded herself with very competent musicians. Dale Wardell is on drums and Sebastian Gilchrist on bass. New boy Shermin Bhugalu on keyboards did a very good job considering that he was only recruited very recently to join the band.

Particularly impressive is the petite lead guitarist, Chillie Stent. She is a special talent. My daughter who is a guitarist herself was blown away, not only by her playing, but by the image she portrayed and her attitude on stage. She kept saying “She’s so cool!”

They are all local musos and their performances certainly underline the depth of the talent available in Durban.

For me the two songs that underlined Krystle’s versatility was her powerful rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You , accompanied by Shermin on piano, and an evocative performance of Pink’s Dear Mr. President with Chillie on an acoustic guitar. Quite memorable.

I also enjoyed Krystle belting out Zombie by the Cranberries and the 1975 hit I Love Rock ‘n Roll.

Of particular note at this show is the skilful sound balance by the Rhumbelow’s resident sound engineer, André Norden. The Rhumbelow offers a wide variety of musical productions and André always gets it spot on. Not an easy task. Also noteworthy is the very effective lighting for this show. Designed by Wesley Maherry, who does the stage lighting for most of the Rhumbelow productions, it certainly added to the party atmosphere of the evening.

So pack your picnic basket or braai, and head for the Rhumbelow Theatre this week end for a very enjoyable rock music revue. Roland Stansell and his team will look after you and you can support the MOTH’s pub.

Rocking The Greatest Hits has performances on May 17 and 18 at 20h00 and on May 19 at 18h30. Tickets are R100. Bring a picnic basket and braais will be available if you wish to cook some meat. A bar is available (no alcohol may be brought onto the premises).
