The Research Centre, Visual Identities in
Art and Design (VIAD), Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, University of
Johannesburg, is looking to appoint a Project Manager on a contract basis. VIAD
is a nationally esteemed Research Centre focusing on visual representations of
identity as a specialised area of knowledge and expertise in art and design
research. The Centre is committed to developing a body of knowledge in a number
of forms (discursive writing, curatorial practice, creative production) around
the thematic of visual identities.
The successful candidate will have a keen
interest in, and knowledge of contemporary – and particularly South African −
visual culture and proven project management skills. S/he should also
demonstrate an understanding of both traditional academic research and
practice-led research in relation to visual art and culture, design practices
and curatorship in these fields. The ability to engage with theoretical
discourses in art and design is essential, as are strong academic writing
skills.
Tasks include assisting with
conceptualisation of events, projects, publications and exhibitions;
conceptualisation, writing and editing of framing texts; planning detailed work
schedules; project/event management; assisting with or undertaking
conceptualisation and writing of funding proposals; assisting with or
undertaking exhibition curatorship, and playing an active role in the
compilation of publications.
Such tasks require good organisational
skills, excellent communication and inter-personal skills, a strong work ethic,
the ability to work well under pressure, the ability to think both
strategically and creatively, flexibility, and an independence which does not
prevent working well with individuals or in a team.
Requirements: fluent English, knowledge of
Microsoft Office, driver’s license and own car. Working knowledge of Photoshop
and InDesign is an advantage.
Remuneration will be negotiated on an
individual basis in accordance with the candidates’ experience, qualifications
and working time agreed to.
