RHYTHM AND DANCE

Rhythm and Dance, the Royal Academy of Dance (KwaZulu-Natal) annual showcase and fundraiser, features 227 dancers aged five to 18 from 16 studios this year. A great diversity of approaches are to be found in this showcase of dance: Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Hip-Hop,Tango, Tap, Jazz, Music Theatre and Celtic.

Outstanding amongst the many highlights are the soloists: classical ballet students Claire Yarde-Leavett, Brittany Gibson and Hannah Ward who represented KZN at the 2012 Royal Academy of Dance Genée International Ballet Competition held in November in Wellington, New Zealand. They will perform the Repertoire dances prescribed by the Genée International Ballet Competition: Raymonda, Variation from Act 3 (Brittany Gibson); Raymonda Variation from Act 1 (Claire Yarde-Leavett); and Kitri’s Variation Act 4 from Don Quixote (Hannah Ward).

The following teachers will each present a programme of their own choice: Susan Cleary; Winsome Fuller; Mary Ann Salvage; Domaine Keyser; Heather Proctor; Sheila Davidson; Brenda McLachlan; Jacqui Weddell/Catherine Brown; Gail Smith; Jenny Walter-Girout; Susan Cook / Jann Esterhuizen; Betty Blake; Bonnie and Kim Hayman; Taryn Leppan; Tertia Ferreira; Glynis van Blerk.

The following studios are represented: Midlands Dance Theatre Centre (Pietermaritzburg); Winsome Fuller Studio of Dance (Glenwood); Mary Ann Salvage School of Ballet (Berea); Domaine School of Dance (Lion’s River); Heather Proctor School of Dancing (Pietermaritzburg); Sheila’s Dance School (Hillcrest); Brenda McLachlan School of Dancing (Pietermaritzburg); JC Dance Studio (Durban North); Gail Smith School of Dancing (Durban North); Springwood School of Dancing  (Durban North); Sue Cook’s Dance Studio (Westville); Betty Blake Academy of Dance (Bluff); KZN Dance Centre (Hillcrest); Highway Dance Academy (Hillcrest); North Coast Dance Group (Ballito) and Lyndale School of Dance (Kokstad).

A portion of the funds raised go towards the Royal Academy of Dance Graded and Vocational Graded Bursary Awards which will take place later in the year in the Hexagon Theatre, Pietermaritzburg, on August 17 as well as the Royal Academy of Dance Graded and Vocational Graded Seminars from September 6 to15 in Durban.
