Dance lovers young
and old can expect a wide selection of dance classes and workshops during the
Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience which takes place at the Elizabeth Sneddon
Theatre, UKZN from August 28 to September 8.
The most loved
fringe, which is the Jomba! Youth Fringe (for youth under 16 years of age) will
take place at Cato Manor in the Wiggins Community Hall on August 31 starting at
14:30. This year’s youth fringe will feature works by many of Durban’s dance
development programmes showing off the impressive dance training being given.
It will feature no less than 20 groups of young dancers from KZN.
Jomba! Fringe which
will take place on September 1 at 19h30 is an open performance platform which
provides an opportunity for up-coming choreographers (dancers over 16 - some
new to choreography and some professional dancers) to present their work in a
professional environment with the support of a full technical team. This is one
of the ways in which the Jomba! festival offers assistance in developing new
and young talent by offering them the space to experiment. Selection of
participants is done by a panel of experts via the scrutiny of entry forms.
Preference is given to choreographers who have already made at least one work
in the idiom of contemporary dance.
This year’s
selected choreographers consist of a selection of KZN-based choreographers such
as Durban’s own 031 Floor Assassins (Preston ‘Kayzo’ Kyd, Craig Katts, Sihle
‘Wooda’ Magubane and Byron ‘Bizzo’ Tifflin) and Durban-based Sifiso ‘Kitsona’
Khumalo from the Flatfoot Training Company, UKZN Howard College student Caitlin
Perkins, Zakhele Ndlovu from the University of Zululand, J.C. Zondi from UKZN
in Pietermaritzburg, Bonwa Mbontsi and Teagan Peacock from Pietermaritzburg,
Kieron Jina from City Varsity in Johannesburg, Finch & Sizakele from
Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative in Johannesburg, Themba Mbuli from Cape
Town and Annie Kloppenberg of Portland, Oregon USA.
Jomba! Dance and
Choreography workshops are open to members of the public over the age of 16 and
begin on August 24 and run until September 5, all of the workshops will be held
in the Dance Studio of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Howard College Campus).
