The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is
conducting a Residency in Clermont as part of its Education and Development
programme. A Residency is an extended visit to communities and features diverse
programmes comprising school visits and community-related initiatives. Up to a
week is spent in a specific community educating, performing and collaborating
with schools and community groups in that area.
The Clermont residency commenced today (August
21) with an education concert at Kwa Dabeka Hall in Clermont.
Another education concert takes place tomorrow
(Thursday, August 22) at 11h00 in the Clermont Indoor Sports Hall. The
residency comes to an end with a spectacular Community Concert in the same
venue at 12h00 on Friday (August 23).
This concert will feature Sithengile
Secondary School choir which represented KZN this year at the South African Schools
Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE). SASCE is an initiative by the Department of Basic
Education to encourage schools to sing choral music. Schools compete against
each other regionally before the competition is taken to a national level and
winners in the respective categories are chosen. Sithengile was placed second
and the KZN Philharmonic is delighted to be working with this talented school.
Also featured in the programme is
Vusukukhanya Primary School and Mcopheleli Primary School. Performing with the
orchestra is a very special occasion for these schools as this is the orchestra’s
first visit to the Clermont Community. The KZN Philharmonic is equally excited
about this initiative.
Two of the soloists are past students from
UKZN Opera School, Nosipho Ntuli (soprano) and Wayne Mkhize (tenor). Nosipho
will perform Or sai chi I’onore from Mozart’s
Don Giovanni and Wayne will perform Ciel e
terra armi di sdegno from Handel’s Tamerlano
as well as Leoncavallo’s Mattinata.
They will also perform the duet Un di
felice from Verdi’s much-loved opera, La
Traviata.
The KZN Philharmonic prides itself on being
an orchestra for the people and uniting the nation through music. The community
concert on August 23 is free to the public and the community of Clermont is
encouraged to come and witness world-class musicians performing in their own
neighbourhood.
