GRAVITY IN 3D & DOLBY ATMOS AT GATEWAY

Movie lovers are in for a treat this weekend, when the much-anticipated sci-fi thriller, Gravity, releases on the big screen. It’s a movie that is out of this world, that features two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and that topped the US box office in its first week of release.

To top that, audiences in Durban can watch the film in larger-than-life 3D in the cinema with the most sophisticated sound system in Africa! Gravity releases on October 18, and the only place to view it is in Cinema 1 with Dolby Atmos, at the Ster-Kinekor Gateway complex.

Launched in the Gateway cinema in December last year, Dolby Atmos enables filmmakers to place or move specific sounds, such as a closing door or a drop of rain, wherever they choose within the theatre. Filmmakers say this next-generation sound technology enables them to create a more realistic sound experience in the theatre – and, it is something that has to be experienced to be appreciated.

As the leading cinema chain in South Africa, Ster-Kinekor continues to improve the cinema viewing experience for its audiences. Installing the Dolby Atmos system in one of the cinemas at its flagship site is testament to the company’s promise to deliver ‘great moments at their greatest’.

In a statement for the film’s release, director Alfonso Cuarón said: “Just as 3D offers added visual dimension, Dolby Atmos creates a virtual reality of sound, which fully immerses the audiences in the aural journey. There is no sound in space, so we incorporated music as an integral element of the movie. The music was composed and designed for a surround experience – different harmonies emerging from the different speakers around the cinema, constantly moving, crashing and blending to create a dynamic experience.”

Watching the film in 3D and hearing it through the technologically superior Dolby Atmos system is a completely immersive cinema experience. The Atmos mix takes full advantage of the amazing nuance, spread and separation of the speakers fitted onto the ceiling and the total range of all the speakers in the theatre.

Gravity, directed by Cuarón (Children of Men), stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Dr Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But, on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes.

The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiralling out into the blackness of space. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth… and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But, the only way home may be to go even further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Gravity is a rare and beautifully realised film that transcends the celluloid with a timeless quality. Cuarón has crafted a film to cherish, one that will amaze, inspire and leave you breathless... The running time of the film is 1hr 39min and it carries a 13LVS classification.
