An
opera-production being managed, directed and conducted by Opera and Choral
Academy students will take place on October 16 and 17.
The
opera is Le Villi by Giacomo Puccini,
one of the highly respected opera composers of the 20th century. The project serves
as an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with necessities and
difficulties of starting a production from the scratch so that they are not
just performers but managers, directors and critical artists and storytellers
of the future.
Le Villi is an opera-ballet written for three
soloists and a chorus. After celebrating an engagement party, Roberto – now
Anna’s fiancĂ© – leaves to collect his inheritance left by his late aunt.
However, he is then seduced by another woman and leaves Anna to die of
heartache. The Willis – virgin ghosts who live in the forest nearby – come to
pardon her soul and influence her to pursue revenge. He comes back later
seeking forgiveness to find her ghost at the end of the forest. Anna, together
with the Willis, propel him to dance until he dies on their feet.
Le Villi will have performances on October 16 and 17 at 18h00 at Jubilee
Hall, Prince Alice Avenue on the UKZN Howard College campus.
