SIYAGIYA 2013

(Hugh Masekela)

Prepare for lift off with this year’s Durban International Music & Cultural Carnival - a musical journey where legends live on…

Mbongeni Ngema and Committed Artists Foundation proudly present Siyagiya 2013, a star-studded live extravaganza which promises to be the prime attraction on Durban’s live music calendar this festive season. This red-letter event takes place at Westridge Park Stadium on December 16 from 17h00 until late. Siyagiya’s glittering artist roster features a powerhouse of top-liners, representing the best of South African and African music.

The first component of this big-stage outdoor entertainment event stars a super-hot roster of young talent, featuring: rising Afro pop songstress, Bingelela; three-man hip-hop group, Norty-Boi-Kru; ghetto-street-soul house music group, Cocktail; maskandi hybrid wonder-boy, David ‘Qadasi’ Jenkins; and Durban’s award-winning group, Afrosoul; along with KZN’s hot-property musical mover-and-shaker, Zakes Bantwini; and heart-soothing vocalist, Naima Kay.

And then, from 20h00, be prepared to be blown away by Siyagiya’s mainstage Jazz Extravaganza, directed by and starring musical giant, Mbongeni Ngema.

Conceived as a tribute to jazz greats such as Sipho Gumede, Alan Kwela and Sandile Shange, the Siyagiya Jazz Extravaganza will be produced along the lines of a fully-fledged stage musical. It will carry Ngema’s unique trademark wow factor production values that have made block-busters such as Sarafina international hits, proclaiming its creator’s unique capacity for thrilling mass audiences.

Appearing alongside Mbongeni Ngema onstage, Siyagiya’s Jazz Extravaganza boasts an awesome roster of front-liners including internationally acclaimed jazz legend, Hugh Masekela; revered world-music super-star, Salif Keita; multi-platinum mega-award-winning singer, Lira; livewire jazz exponents Velephi Khumalo, Themba Mkhize, Bongani Nkwanyana, Bheki Khoza and Durban’s much loved Heels Over Head; indigenous musician Sazi Dlamini; world music figurehead, Madala Kunene; as well as the gifted young poet, Botlhale Boikanyo, winner of last year’s SA’s Got Talent competition.

Accompanying these stars will be a vibrant collage of Zulu and contemporary dancers, and a crack 15-piece band comprising highly respected musos such as keyboard players Eddie Mathiba, Butana Ngubeni and Barny Bophela, guitarist John Seloloane, sax player Khaya Mahlangu, trumpeters Sidney Mavundla and Adam Howard, trombone player Basil Roberts and percussionist Sibonile Ngubane, among others.

Tickets ranging from R150 to R350 booked through Computicket on 0861 915 8000 or online at www.computicket.com. Early booking is advised for this six-hour bonanza which is set to become an annual fixture on Durban’s festive season calendar.

Committed Artists Foundation receives generous funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) and it is this support which makes the production of Siyagiya 2013 possible. The event is also supported by SABC 1.
