South African indie folk duo Digby and the Lullaby are performing
this weekend at Durban’s Rhumbelow Theatre to launch their stirring debut
album, The Somewhere Wind.
With Rouchelle Hubsch on vocals and piano, and Darren
Digby Peens on backing vocals and guitar, Digby and the Lullaby have been
described as “a match made in heaven”. They’ve cast their indie-folk spell on
audiences from Cape Town to New York with their quiet confessions and secret
yearnings. They were invited to perform at the 2013 Witness Hilton Arts
festival.
Their debut album The
Somewhere Wind is an independently-funded labour of love that took two
years to make. Produced by New York producer Kieran Kelly, the album features
world renowned musicians Rob Calder on bass and Mason Ingram on drums, delicate
string arrangements, and South Africa’s own Farryl Purkiss on backing vocals on
the track Sweet Starry Night.
“We wanted to make good art,” says Peens. “We wanted to
create something that was beautiful but at the same time, real and
unprocessed,” Hubsch adds. “It’s an honest album, both sonically and lyrically.
We really opened ourselves up and laid our souls bare in a journey that became
us, became this album.”
If the album is a reflection of their journey, Digby and
the Lullaby take it one step further in their show, pausing between songs to
share their own stories and anecdotes with people in the audience. “That’s why
we love the theatre culture,” says Hubsch. “We get to really engage with our
audience and take them with us on The
Somewhere Wind.”
There are three more performances: tomorrow (November 9)
at 20h00 and Sunday (November 10) at 14h00 and 18h30. The venue opens 90
minutes before show for picnic dinner. Tickets R100 (R75 pensioner discount for
the 14h00 show on Sunday) booked through Computicket.
Braais will be available for those who wish to cook some
meat. There is also a cash bar (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). The Somewhere Wind will be on sale at
the theatre for the duration of the show.
